Die Neue Sammlung in Munich is updating the presentation of its Thonet collection. The presentation was conceived by Steffen Kehrle, who has in parallel designed a chair for the museum. A workshop report.
The established shape of the iconic 214 and 209 bentwood chairs served as inspiration for the design by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility: the S 220 is a material-efficient, stackable moulded plywood chair with an ergonomic seat shell and a light tubular steel frame. Featuring optional armrests, the chair can be used in a variety of settings – from private homes to the contract sector – and is available in a range of different woods and colours. The chair’s design pushes the limits of what is technically possible using the material of moulded plywood, which has always been a driver of innovation at Thonet. The S 220 has an understated organic form as well as precise lines, and its moulded plywood shell is comfortable and supportive. The chair’s elegant hourglass shape means that the seat shell has just the right amount of give. A smoothly rounded front edge perfectly embodies the harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics and functionality that is so characteristic of the S 220. This “waterfall edge”, as the designers call it, avoids pressure points, makes the chair more comfortable and picks up the radii of the tubular steel frame. The range has been expanded with the barstools S 220 H.
