Die Neue Sammlung in Munich is updating the presentation of its Thonet collection. The presentation was conceived by Steffen Kehrle, who has in parallel designed a chair for the museum. A workshop report.
Stefan Diez has designed a wooden chair programme that relates to our bentwood heritage but transformed it by aesthetical and technological criteria. Bent chair legs and armrests merge in a "knot" and are embedded from underneath in the ergonomically shaped seat. With a suspenseful contrast between the elegantly curved wooden elements and the striking upholstery the program communicates and also offers comfort: it does not prescribe a specific seating position, and the organically shaped backrest is comfortably flexing. Chair (404) and larger sized armchair (404 F). Version with soft comfort cushioning of seat and backrest: chair 405 PF. Seat and backrest made of moulded plywood, leg and backrest rails made of laminate wood in natural or stained beech or white pigmented lacquer. Upholstery covers in leather or fabric. Wooden barstool (404 H) laminate wood in natural or stained beech or white pigmented lacquer.
