Learning from the forest

In Luxembourg, a new school takes up the surrounding forest in the design of its facade. Its panels were provided by perforated metal specialist RMIG who also acted as a consultant for all aspects of the project.

A new music studies building at Borupgaard Gymnasium on the outskirts of Copenhagen has been decorated with a striking facade using precision perforated aluminium panels from RMIG.
The new 600 m2 music building is designed by Sweco Architects A/S and has the same square structure as the existing high school building. The classrooms and rehearsal rooms are specially adapted for musical education and constructed with robust and sustainable building materials.
RMIG has supplied the 3 mm thick perforated aluminium panels used for the 5 metre high and 13.5 metre long facade and collaborated closely with artist Helle Hove when developing the design.
Inspiration for the design of the facade came from various sources. The idea for the “wave” representing movement and enthusiasm (and perhaps sound waves from music) emerged from a dialogue between a group of teachers and pupils from the high school.
Another main source of inspiration for the figures on the facade was ‘katagami’, a hand-carved paper stencil used in Japan from the 10th century. These ancient stencils have a certain similarity to the modern perforated panels. Both possess a two-dimensional sharpness, precision and aesthetic appeal that create the possibility of “translation” into a work of art.
The facade, which decorates the entrance of the new music building, consists of perforated aluminium panels mounted on a dark background, forming the image of a “wave” and other spherical patterns that create a movement and dynamic on the facade that is also seen in the building’s advanced floor plan.
RMIG Project Consultant Steffen Andersen explains: “This was a very exciting project to be involved in. At our production facilities, we have the opportunity to show architects and artists the innovative techniques available for their projects. This enables us to transform the visions they have into reality. We have experience in the kind of programming needed to create images using perforation and the close collaboration we had with the artist to create the complex pattern needed to transfer her vision accurately to the facade, made this an interesting and challenging task and has produced a stylish and aesthetic result.”
