String Furniture 2023: PIRA G2
A modular shelving system that can be freestanding as well as wall-mounted is a sought-after piece of furniture yesterday as it is today. For the most flexible use of space, it is even more worthwhile to look at the modular classics: in 1955, on the occasion of the Swedish "Helsingborg Exhibition 1955", the architect Olle Pira designed an elegant structure that could be adapted as needed. Based on this design, the architect Anna von Schewen and the industrial designer Björn Dahlström have created a current re-edition: "Pira G2". "The aim was never to design a retro-style piece of furniture, but rather to take the core idea of the original design and create a higher, wider version," says Björn Dahlström. And Anna von Schewen explains: "The central aspect in the design of 'Pira G2' is the bar, which makes the shelf, stretched from floor to ceiling, completely free-standing. Another important feature is the way the shelves wrap around the rods and are connected as if they were one piece. It is a kind of furniture design that creates a gestalt, even though it is a modular system."
In detail, "Pira G2" is available in widths of 70 centimetres as well as 90 centimetres and can be placed freestanding up to 318 centimetres high in the room. The shelves are made of steel sheets painted white or black-grey, the bars of extruded aluminium. The optional cupboards, meanwhile, are available in walnut and white oak - and match perfectly the bookends and folders that are made of the same woods for "Pira G2". (am)
