Spitzbart 2024: ‘CUT IT!’ spiral staircase
It all began with a straight staircase made from a single piece of untreated steel. Based on the principle of a pop-up card, Max Wehberg's design involved cutting a sheet of steel around 10 millimetres thick with a laser cutter and then bending it into the shape of a staircase using hand levers. Its great success led the Franconian family business to apply the principle to tables, benches, shelves, wardrobes, containers, low and highboards and beds.
The new spiral staircase completes the series of unique pieces, which Spitzbart sees as both everyday furniture and everyday art. The material comes exclusively from Germany, which means that short supply chains and reduced assembly routes fulfil the company's sustainability standards. Every ‘Cut it!’ piece of furniture is manufactured in the company's own workshop in Oberasbach near Nuremberg. ‘In principle, we can fulfil every design wish,’ says Margit Spitzbart. Only a few materials allow for such delicate and functional staircase production, and the material will not lose its characterful radiance – even if it is ever recycled. (eb)
