Enjoying the inclement English weather – behind glass
Buildings at the New Brighton waterfront location in Great Britain are subject to special conditions; take the “Prom Apartments New Brighton” located on the Mersey River, where they are constantly exposed to high levels of wind and noise. This prompted Falconer Chester Hall Architects to completely glaze the balconies and terraces. This involved mounting the Solarlux SL 25 slide and turn system on the SL 45 transparent folding door. This not only serves to protect against driving rain, but can also withstand the highest of wind loads. The slide and turn system features eight-millimeter-thick single pane safety glass (ESG).
Affording ideal protection against both rain and wind glazing means enhanced quality of living for occupants. Moreover, the level of outdoor noise is muted to 25 decibels. By contrast, the space between the apartment and glazing acts as a puffer that has a positive impact on the energy balance. Thanks to the Solarlux balcony and terrace glazing the outside space can also be used during bad weather with no loss of daylight. When the sun shines the slide and turn elements can be moved to one side and open inwards creating the outdoor balcony character in no time at all. (am)
