A treasure in the dunes
A five-star hotel embedded in the dunes, the eye wanders across the Mediterranean’s crystal-clear water – and there are no other buildings in sight to clutter the view: Hotel Le Dune Piscinas just outside the village of Ingurtosu offers its guests the true luxury of remoteness. The region was once renowned for mining, among other metals silver, and today it’s an oasis of tranquility: FVR Engineering and architects Antonio Gardoni and Luca Platto, who runs PL-AG Studio, teamed up with local artisans to caringly modernize the 3,800 square meters of the existing building. When devising the concept for the interior design, they decided to link the place’s historical significance with the present: "Rather than simply crafting an exclusive hotel with 28 rooms, we aimed to develop a project that felt as though it belonged, one that exuded a sense of continual occupation and vitality,” the duo explain.
Alongside the attention paid to Sardinian culture, harmony with nature was key – wind, light, and water are omnipresent here along the coast, transforming your stay into a real sensory experience. In order to ensure guests can enjoy it and relax, the designers chose furniture courtesy of Pedrali for the atmospheric outdoor area in front of the hotel’s I Gechi bar: "The recurring 'woven' motif throughout the entire project holds significant importance for us as it allows us to creatively interpret traditional Sardinian crafts in a contemporary way. This theme is exemplified in both the 'Reva Twist' and 'Panarea' series. The versatile 'Elliot' tables are an optimal choice, offering a variety of sizes and finishes, including natural stones. The 'Rail' sun loungers are ideal for beach settings, blending seamlessly into the natural protected surroundings with minimal visual disruption," comments PL-AG Studio. The reference to the traditional craft of wickerwork is thus taken up, for example, in the steel backrests and armrests of “Reva Twist”, which are woven from flat cords made of weatherproof polypropylene.
While the furniture design has the feel of having been dreamed up specially for the natural surrounding, the great comfort of the soft cushions of the “Panarea” armchairs made by CMP Design as well as the “Reva Twist” lounge armchairs and sofas designed by Patrick Jouin, guarantee a relaxing time outdoors. And you can partake of that ice-cold drink sitting at one of the elegant “Elliot” tables likewise masterminded by the French designer. At the poolside, “Rail” sun loungers invite you to stretch your legs, after placing the backrest in the optimal comfy position. Thanks to the covers made of water-repellent and UV-resistant textile, guests at Hotel Le Dune Piscinas will be able to enjoy basking by the pool for a long time to come.
The luxury hotel also boasts a library that can be used for conferences and events, meaning anyone so fortunate as to be invited to a convention at this glorious location will sit down on “Malmö” chairs by CMP Design. Made of ash wood and lacquered in fresh green, they certainly catch the eye, too. The founders of CMP Design, Michele Cazzaniga, Simone Mandelli and Antonio Pagliarulo, are acutely aware of the importance of details to a design, and the seats of the chairs thus rest on a structure of legs that angle backwards along with tapering elements to make for interesting views from any angle. "The isolated location of this ancient mining warehouse, the final stop on the miners' journey before the minerals were sent out to sea, is a vital component of the project aiming to create a self-sustaining and idyllic world within its walls. Inside these structures, shielded from the dominating presence of nature, residents can enjoy a life of luxury and comfort, surrounded by the books from the library, a notable collection of contemporary art, and a series of custom-designed elements and spaces that inspire the senses and ignite the imagination," is how PL-AG Studio summarizes the design.
