An Interplay Called Architecture

For 25 years, Pascal Gontier has been exploring sustainable construction methods in his architecture. This summer, the Galerie d'Architecture in Paris is dedicating an exhibition to his studio and explores the question: What is architecture an interplay of?

The Galerie d'Architecture is an exhibition space that has been dedicated to international contemporary architecture since it opened in 1999. Located in the centre of the Marais district, it is transformed at the rhythm of various exhibitions. These showcase the work of young, emerging architects, landscape architects and designers from around the world, as well as of experienced and successful practitioners. The exhibition opening in August presents the work of Pascal Gontier. With his studio, the Parisian-born architect has been a pioneer in ecological housing construction and the creation of social spaces for a quarter of a century.

How the relationship of human society to its environment is shaped is the essence of architecture itself. The challenges of each era offer architecture the opportunity to step outside the box, to research and experiment, and to go beyond norms and best practices. They also invite the revitalisation of morphologies and structural and architectural elements that have been increasingly neglected in the recent past, for example with the growing importance of technology in buildings. Finally, they enable their protagonists to view architecture not only as the famous interplay of volumes assembled under light, but also as the interplay of sensory impressions and materials, of space and time, of the ephemeral and the permanent, of restictions and freedoms, of their planners and their inhabitants. Based on these philosophical premises, the exhibition presents an architectural career that has been dedicated to the practice of sustainable building and is characterised by realisations, projects, research, and experiments.
