Atrium at Reinhard Ernst Museum

Colour is Everything!

On 23 June 2024, the time has come: Wiesbaden is getting a new cultural institution, the Museum Reinhard Ernst (mre), and with it an outstanding hotspot for the art of abstraction.

The museum is already an attraction from the outside. As the only museum building in Europe designed by the award-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, the architecture attracts visitors with its clear lines and bright glass. Wiesbaden entrepreneur Reinhard Ernst had the building constructed for his own collection with his Reinhard & Sonja Ernst Foundation. This includes high-calibre works of contemporary art from 1945 to the present day.

Designed as an overall concept, the building is intended to enter into a dialogue with the art it houses. In the foyer, visitors will be greeted by site-specific glass works by Katharina Grosse and a newly commissioned work by Bettina Pousttchi. On the opening day, the first presentation of the collection "Colour is Everything!" can be admired free of charge, showing around sixty works of Abstract Expressionism, Art Informel and the Japanese Gutai Group. These include paintings and sculptures by Tony Cragg, Karl Otto Götz, Hans Hartung, Pierre Soulages, Frank Stella and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Under the direction of Dr Oliver Kornhoff, the museum aims to be a place for everyone with a wide range of educational programmes. For instance, the mornings are reserved exclusively for school classes. You can look forward to the ensemble of architecture and fine arts in the Hessian capital!
