In the form of “Yard”, Stefan Diez has achieved something of a cultural synthesis for Italian outdoor furniture makers Emu. The chairs and tables fit perfectly outside an Italian ice-cream parlor or on the patio, the lounger and side-table you invariably imagine on a Californian poolside, and the bar stool would fit any beach bar from Spain to the Caribbean. In short: Here, Italian “dolce vita” and the American way of life leisurely bond, with an added shot of Bavarian thoroughness and perfection, of course. Indeed, all the family members are made of an ultra-light, powder-coated aluminum frame and the seats are spanned with broad elastic bands that render cushions quite superfluous. And they all come in marvelously flowing shapes and bright colors. (tw)
