PREVIEW – MATTER AND SHAPE 2025
Bridge between worlds
New perspectives across all disciplines await guests at Matter and Shape in Paris – a show that presents many creative disciplines from industrial and object design to interior design, fashion and decorative arts. Over 50 exhibitors will have the opportunity to set up individual stands in the 5000 square metre area. There will also be a culinary offering, a design bookshop and communal areas for guests. The exhibiting companies include cc-tapis ft. India Mahdavi, FLOS, GRAU, SolidNature and Vitra (curated by Julie Richoz).
The inspiration for the second edition of Matter and Shape is the centenary of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes – the international exhibition of modern decorative and applied arts held in Paris in 1925, a predominantly European event in which twenty-one countries took part to present a selection of works from their populations. The guidelines were clearly formulated: ‘Only original works showing a marked tendency towards aesthetic renewal of form will be accepted. Imitations of old styles and industrial productions without artistic inspiration will not be accepted.’
The sculptural synthesis of the arts of the modern style was in great demand at the time and was given the name ‘Art Deco’ in the course of the event, which also became established internationally in the years that followed. The exhibits were characterised by a longing for a new era, for elegant exclusivity and a new expression on both a small and large scale. It also offered a combination of high-quality craftsmanship and industrial production. Matthieu Pinet and Dan Thawley will draw on this transformative spirit to lead the event, exploring the ongoing dialogue between tradition and progress in design and inspiring new ideas for the future.
The design salon will once again be organised by Willo Perron from Perron-Roettinger Studio. In addition to presentations by the manufacturers, the programme includes the Jil Sander Design Talks on current topics in the industry: guests are for example the architects Christoph Gantenbein (Christ & Gantenbein) and Sumayya Vally (Counterspace) or the designer Francesco Zorzi (NM3). The talks will subsequently be published as podcasts in cooperation with KoozArch. The complete programme of Matter and Shape can be viewed on the event's homepage. (am)
