London in the light
Public space, its creative appropriation and transformation through the involvement of the public will be essential themes at the upcoming London Design Festival, led by Ben Evens: a mixed reality installation is planned, developed by Tin Drum Studios and architect Sou Fujimoto, that explores the interrelationship of nature, people and structure, changing through audience interaction. Similarly, the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), in partnership with furniture manufacturer Benchmark, has selected emerging designers to create sculptural signposts made of sustainable American red oak for each of the city's ten design districts. A variety of specially crafted installations and works by international contemporary designers will also be exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum space, the traditional hub of the London Design Festival. Issues of sustainability lead the works, whether related to a low-carbon future, the circular economy, climate justice, or to the intersections between technology and design.
Making a debut as part of the festival this year is the "Design London" show in the new Design District on the Greenwich Peninsula, September 22-25, 2021, featuring a curated selection of established furniture, lighting and interior design brands, as well as work by both renowned and emerging designers. Planned as a hybrid event, the London Design Festival will feature installations, shows, and events alongside a comprehensive accompanying digital program of tours, talks, and workshops. For the visualization of the festival, the creative agency Pentagram is exploring the dimensional depth of the typographic form.
So you can look forward to it - and at the same time you'll be spoilt for choice, because September is likely to be quite hectic for the design scene due to the high density of events caused by the pandemic. (am)
