Hubert Sanktjohanser will nicht mit dem Kopf durch die Wand. Jan 19, 2016
So how many square meters does a chair, table or cupboard actually measure? To be honest, exact figures don’t really help much in giving you a clear idea of things. It’s better to have it before you, life-size, as with the installation “The Wall. Furniture of 1, 2 and 3 Square Meters” for the imm cologne’s “Featured Editions” – where Hubert Sanktjohanser skillfully unfolds items of furniture out of a wooden wall. What’s your relationship to walls? Hubert Sanktjohanser: For me, Marlen Haushofer’s “The Wall” was one of the most exciting books I read in the 1990s. But it has nothing to do with the installation. I’m interested in the relationship between surface and volume as raw design material and as the basis for all design proposals: The surface as wall, the absence of wall as an opening. Do you discern in each board the piece of furniture you could make from it? No. When did you have the idea of furniture made of 1, 2 and 3 square meters? The installation highlights the transition from surface to volume, from wall to space – and is an attempt to achieve a symbiosis of architecture and furniture. |
