Discrete and charming
The upper-class home of a social climber: Coco Chanel’s apartment on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré was fitted out to impress in typical upper-class Parisian style. This included carved wood paneling, painted overdoors, ceilings with lavish stucco and shiny parquet floors. Here, she received “Tout-Paris” in the 1920s. Since that time, the apartment has been inhabited by other celebrities – namely Greta Garbo and Cecile de Rothschild – and the residential and utility rooms have been renovated. It can now be hired, for example for events. The photographs shown here were taken during a presentation by Copenhagen-based furniture producers “&tradition”. Coco’s home certainly does lend the pieces a distinct noblesse – its former owner would presumably have acknowledged this with an air of indifference and as a matter of course. (fap)
