Comfort in the front row
The property at Stachus, Karlsplatz in Munich, has always been dedicated to hospitality: In a prominent city centre location near the main railway station, the city's well-heeled visitors found a temporary home as early as the end of the 19th century. The architecture was no less dynamic, however, due to the destructive consequences of the Second World War and the functionalist structures of post-war planning. The existing building was demolished in 2019. The new 24,200 square metre building by Spanish architecture firm Nieto Sobejano for the Koenigshof is therefore a fresh start in many respects – and from pole position: the new hotel is part of the Marriott Hotel Group's Luxury Collection and is impressively designed down to the last detail.
The cubic design on nine floors is interrupted by a vertical incision in the façade, which visually opens the building into two parts. Plenty of daylight enters through both the building joint and the numerous wooden and metal box-type windows. The golden louvre structures, which create a symbiosis of exterior and interior, are thus perfectly showcased. They also serve as graceful acoustic elements in the interior, so that the sound in the 20 metre long atrium is always muffled despite its imposing size. The building's polished travertine, together with the striking, contemporary character of the architecture, creates a visual harmony with the existing buildings in the neighbourhood. Barely opened, the Koenigshof is already one of the most popular addresses in the city when it comes to fine dining – even among locals thanks to the restaurant and bar on the roof.
One of the comforts that guests of the Koenigshof can enjoy is the luxurious furnishing of the 106 rooms: the interior designers Landau + Kindelbacher have curated the bathrooms, focusing on natural materials, soft colours and maximum comfort. The elegant shapes from AXOR fit perfectly into this pleasant atmosphere and complement the dark marble cladding of the washbasins and bathtubs with the Brushed Black Chrome (PVD) colour scheme. The ‘AXOR One single-lever basin mixer’ and the ‘AXOR One thermostatic lower module’ and the ‘AXOR Starck bar hand shower’ were selected for these. In addition to the aesthetic design, the function of the AXOR products is finely tuned: With an integrated aerator and AirPower technology, the water jet runs particularly easily and pleasantly, while reducing the consumption of the resource. The bar hand shower by designer Philippe Starck also saves a lot of water and energy thanks to EcoSmart technology, with a maximum flow rate of just eight litres per minute.
At the Koenigshof, guests can enjoy holistically designed convenience that offers relaxation and the realisation that contemporary luxury focuses on the essentials.
