A little piece of Italy high above Vienna
The requirement was a central location for a good 1,600 employees from various affiliate companies of Austrian Federal Railways, or ÖBB as it’s known in German, and the opportunity arose with the new urban quarter around Vienna’s new main railway station. Architects Zechner & Zechner triumphed in the competition with their streamlined design and completed the spacious company headquarters back in 2014. The space planning and interior design was designed from Innocad Architects in keeping with the modern trend for open space – flexible zones give employees a choice between quiet islands for concentrated work and open areas for discussions. On top of this there are ample areas in which to linger and a “Skylobby” for events.
As far as the color scheme was concerned, ÖBB proved it was willing to be bold: The meeting cubes separated off by glass dividing walls are awash with bright red and rich yellow. In keeping with the style, the “Catifa 46” chairs from Italian furnishing expert Arper were selected. The comfortable chairs with their rotating bases are the work of design trio Lievore Altherr Molina. From the many variations, for the ÖBB headquarters Innocad Architektur decided on the upholstered seat made of monochrome polypropylene with chrome-plated armrests. These match perfectly with the elegant “Fred” table by Jean-Marie Massaud, with its delicate aluminum frame. The Skylobby is the showcase for the “Catifa 60” by Lievore Altherr Molina in red and black. With its broad seat and height-adjustable backrest, the lounge chair proves to be the perfect spot in which to relax during a lunchbreak or to enjoy the magnificent view of Vienna once the working day is done.
