Interface: Prototype of a CO2-negative Rubber Flooring
Interface unveils milestone with CO2-negative rubber flooring prototype.
Interface has taken a significant step in its sustainability strategy to become CO2-negative by 2040. The company presented the first prototype of a CO2-negative rubber flooring under the nora brand at BAU 2025, which stores more carbon than is emitted during its production. This innovation follows Interface's "All In" commitment to invest in product development and manufacturing to drive CO2 reduction and storage without relying on offsets.
The prototype utilizes bio-based and CO2-sequestering materials to minimize the carbon footprint from raw material sourcing to production. Drawing on decades of experience with bio-based materials, Interface has created a CO2-negative rubber floor. The prototype is expected to be market-ready by the end of 2025 after further refinement. Since acquiring nora systems in 2018, Interface has already reduced the carbon footprint of its nora products by 26% and is now aiming to offer a commercially viable CO2-negative solution that meets the design and performance requirements.
The company emphasizes that the new development will also help customers achieve their own sustainability goals without compromising on design or performance.
