FLOS: Bellhop Glass by Edward Barber
The Evolution of the Bellhop: From Portable Lamp to Versatile Lighting Solution.
The Bellhop, one of the most iconic designs by E. Barber & J. Osgerby for Flos, has undergone a remarkable evolution. Originally conceived as a compact, colourful portable light, the Bellhop collection has expanded over the last eight years to include a full range of lighting solutions that now also includes a floor lamp, a wall spotlight and an outdoor bollard.
The Bellhop was originally designed in the restaurant of the Design Museum to bounce light off surfaces. With the introduction of Bellhop Glass, not only the size but also the material has changed fundamentally. Glass and metal have replaced plastic, causing the lamp to emit a soft, even glow rather than reflect light off its surface. A carefully designed lower opening prevents glare and ensures optimal visual comfort.
A custom Triplex Opal glass diffuser was developed in collaboration with the Flos R&D department. The diffuser is made of three layers – clear, white and clear – that are mouth-blown simultaneously. The diffuser then undergoes a 24-hour cooling process in a furnace that starts at around 800 degrees. This process guarantees even light distribution and excellent workmanship.
The Bellhop table lamp has an aluminium base and is available in bright aluminium, cioko and white. The pendant lamp is available in three different sizes, which can be perfectly integrated into different room concepts.
The Bellhop collection by Flos impressively demonstrates how a design can be further developed and adapted to new requirements over the years. Combining innovative materials and well thought-out design, the Bellhop defines new standards in the world of lighting.
