Kvadrat: Ame by Teruhiro Yanagihara
Sustainable Upholstery Fabric Inspired by Japanese Sashiko Technique.
Ame is a durable and sustainable upholstery fabric designed by Teruhiro Yanagihara, and it is the first woven Kvadrat textile made from recycled polyester, entirely from textile waste. Inspired by the Japanese repair technique Sashiko, it demonstrates the potential of textile-to-textile recycling. Ame is as robust as new polyester fabric and also recyclable. It is woven with two differently sized yarns, creating a micro-pattern that mimics Sashiko stitches. Teruhiro Yanagihara emphasizes the Japanese philosophy of sustainability and integrated the colors and precision of Sashiko into modern weaving techniques. He was inspired by textiles and techniques along the historic Silk Road, particularly the art of "Kasane no Irome" from the Heian period, which combined colorful layers of kimonos. Ame is ideal for offices, restaurants, and private spaces seeking a revitalizing atmosphere.
