Walter Knoll: Aion Table by Norman Foster
Archaic Beauty – The Aion Table.
A table made of wood, reduced to its essential components: a strong foundation gently supports a tabletop with a soft profile. The unadulterated form and structure exude originality and authenticity, strong in expression and sculptural in appearance. This masterpiece is the result of collaboration with the internationally renowned design and architecture firm Foster + Partners.
The Aion Table harmoniously integrates into any space, adding lightness and modernity. The table program offers high adaptability to spatial conditions and individual needs, with various lengths, widths, and tabletop shapes. The table edge can be executed in Basic (straight edge), Advanced (beveled edge), and Soft (rounded edge) variants. Additionally, various veneer types and Fenix surfaces are available. The tabletop is supported by a frame of table legs or panels.
Thanks to patented know-how, it is possible to create a soft edge with Fenix. The Fenix lies smoothly on the surface, gently reflecting light and flowing over the soft profile. An elegant contrast is provided by the integrated solid wood edge, which gives the Aion Table warmth. The soft edge processing subtly yet significantly enhances the table’s expressive form. A symbiosis of craftsmanship and material technology reveals itself layer by layer.
Discreet recesses for cable channels are located in the panels and table legs. A hanging cover on the inside of the panel allows easy access. Concealed cable channels in the table legs provide space for up to three cables, meeting modern media equipment requirements. These nets can be retrofitted at any time with a simple hanging system. No visible cables, no irritation – instead, an elegant connection of function and form.
For variable electrification, the table program can be equipped with the Connector X-System. Under a gently closing flap on the table’s central axis lie the connectors, which receive an insert made of leather, matching veneer, or a lacquered surface. The technical infrastructure seamlessly integrates into the reduced aesthetics of the furniture.
