Creating a sharper awareness

The collaboration with various experts of design, architecture and art is a continuous stimulus for LAUFEN to identify new solutions that make the bathroom more and more personal, pleasant and unique. The Swiss artist Monique Baumann was invited to reinterpret some pieces from the Kartell
• LAUFEN collection with her eclectic style that mixes colours, materials and different compositional techniques.
The creative edition in collaboration with Monique Baumann will be presented at Milan Design Week 2023 as part of the new space collection, which brings together some of the most extraordinary projects produced by the company in recent years and born from the work done together with renowned designers, architects and artists.
Using a wide range of materials, from photographic prints, paper clippings, drawings, adhesive tapes, cardboard, posters, Monique Baumann relies on an extremely spontaneous and analogical creative process that generates a different work every time, in an innovative anarchy that allows images and forms to disintegrate, to create new images and acquire new meanings.
LAUFEN has given Monique Baumann carte blanche to give free rein to her creative process, which has given rise to three artworks designed for the bathroom environment that are very different from each other in terms of chromatic choice and above all in the type of technique used – charcoal, paint and the collage.
The three graphics have been applied and adapted to some pieces of the iconic Kartell • LAUFEN collection, such as the large free-standing washbasin, the round countertop washbasin in Saphirkeramik and the wall-hung toilet. Thanks to the mastery in the ceramic manufacturing that distinguishes LAUFEN for over 130 years, the artistic collages are baked into the ceramic glaze for a long life.
Using spray paint onto broad strokes of colour, masking tape on layers of paper and photographs, charcoal with more geometric graphics, Monique has created three very sophisticated works of art that together create a bold aesthetic for the bathroom, that conveys a positive energy and provides an unprecedented depth. In her creative process, the Swiss artist relies completely on a creative flow which through the free use of different materials and colours allows to obtain a graphic work characterized by a new materiality. Colour plays an important role for her, it must communicate energy and lightness, and “even black”, she says “if well combined and balanced with white or other colors, has a delicate character to me”.
What Monique Baumann finds particularly stimulating in this project is the idea that her art can become part of such an intimate and private environment, such as the bathroom, always creating new perspectives and new styles. In this way her art remains alive and continues to regenerate.
Monique Baumann’s art for the new ADA faucets
Analyzing the bathroom environment, Monique Baumann drew inspiration to bring her art onto the storage discs of the new ADA faucets. Three small works of art, in two different sizes to adapt to the washbasin mixer and to the column single lever bath mixer, inspired by water, stone, wood but also by the sensations that the bathroom offers us.
Using the collage technique and through completely intuitive associations, Monique Baumann has graphically interpreted the colours, materials and shapes, not only of the furnishings but also of the objects, that the bathroom offers, creating three small abstract paintings. The sensuality of water, perfumed oils or certain natural materials is combined with the feelings that the coldest surfaces such as glass or steel can awaken in us.
