What must a standing/sitting desk offer? A glance at the trade suggests the key parameters for the classic systems desk are primarily the technology, ergonomics and total load it can bear. Design? Hardly. “For Normcore we took a different approach,” comments Sebastian Waibel at Gumpo. The Munich-based design studio Relvãokellermann gave design and function an equal weighting in the case of “steno”: The silhouette has a graphic touch, and nothing upsets the clear visual lines. The drive and cables as well as the base-frame structure are elegantly concealed by the side sections, that taper forwards and upwards. If more is required, then a cable tray, a vanity screen or accessories such as bag hooks can be flexibly included, suspended from the frame. “We wanted to find a better design for the basics for any office and yet not develop something the market could not use,” Sebastian Waibel recollects. And a success it has been: “steno” is a charming and likewise elegant basic product with a striking aesthetic and convincingly conceived functions.
