Biography
A seminal influence in the world of architecture and design, Amanda Levete has spent her career exploring the transformative potential of space through a number of remarkable buildings and furniture pieces. Her interest lies in the physical and metaphysical, the organic and the man-made - working with diametrically opposed elements to create the unexpected. She is widely acclaimed for her ability to bring visionary projects to fruition and for realising the ambitions of private and public sector clients.
Considered one of Britain's most accomplished architects, Levete has received a number of internationally prestigious commissions, including the media campus for News Corporation in East London and a major new hotel and retail development in Bangkok for Central Retail Corporation. She has forged long-term relationships with artists - a joint project with Anish Kapoor for the Naples Subway is now on site. Amanda Levete's individual furniture pieces for Established & Sons have been called sublime, pushing materials and design to their limits. Through this relationship she has produced a number of iconic pieces including the Drift bench and the Around the Corner pieces - each carved into a form by an advanced software program and then worked by hand.
Levete trained at the Architectural Association and worked for Richard Rogers before joining Future Systems as a partner in 1989. She is visiting professor at the Royal College of Art and a trustee of Artangel. Levete is a regular TV and radio broadcaster and she writes a column for Building magazine.
The formation of Amanda Levete Architects in 2009 follows the end of Levete's 20 year partnership with the late Jan Kaplicky at the influential office of Future Systems. One of the most innovative practices of its time, Future Systems completed award winning and internationally recognised buildings including Selfridges department store in Birmingham and the media centre at Lord's cricket ground which won the prestigious Stirling Prize.
