Beauty enables us to find and lose ourselves at the same time. Embracing both times gone by as well as the present, Sultans of Swing captures imperial elegance and the sheer pleasure of blowing new life into long-standing shapes and forms.
Captivated by the unique Dutch river landscape that surrounded a solitary house on an embankment, William saw not just the passing of
water, but also the passing of time.
He was invited to visit, as the owners of the house wanted a new light tailor-made lighting sculpture for their home. Through the huge river
facing window, only water and air were visible. A private boat, with a huge twisted rope around it, was anchored in front.
The house was contemporary, but filled with classical elements like heavy velvet curtains. The details and atmosphere of the surroundings were translated into a new lighting sculpture, with for example the electrical wiring integrated in such a way that the boat’s rope was repeated. A characteristic contemporary Brand van Egmond chandelier was the result, beholding distinctive classic elements.
Brand van Egmond made the Sultans of Swing collection available in several models;
as round, conical and oval chandeliers, a round hanging lamp a round ceiling lamp, a
table and a wall light. All are delivered in nickel finish.
Due to its aesthetic values, the Sultans of Swing is been applied in both classical palaces as well as contemporary villas.
William Brands comments on his work:
I love working with strong archetypes. The view of this house on the water: sky,
anchored boat and the classical elements in the contemporary house all deserved to
be balanced with the light that I had to design. I find the tassel a universal archetype
that I gladly allow to resurface in this contemporary design. I never want to completely
recreate the past, but love blowing new life in elements of the past.
