Nostalgia and drive

Paolo Rizzatto, a designer who has enriched Alias catalogue from its very beginning with refined products, introduces in the collection violon in occasion of the Salone del Mobile 2022 in Milan: an armchair with a flexible shell that adapts to the body and gives great comfort. Paolo Rizzatto has been inspired by Man Ray's work "Le violon d'Ingres" (1924), one of the most iconic images in the history of art. The violin f-holes painted by the artist on the back of the model Kiki de Montparnasse transform her body into a musical instrument and play with the idea of objectification of an animated body. A picture that represents an audacious juxtaposition of the female body with the viola, whose rounded silhouette echoes its forms. Alias expands its proposal with an elegant lounge armchair, whose shapes are the result of a long process of synthesis between forms, technologies and materials. The project was born around the idea of using a soft and structural material, hide, revised in a technological key by Alias. Violon shell, structure and seat at the same time, is constructed in such a way that it can be elastically deformed and then return to its original form, enveloping those who sit down "in an embrace". A chair of extraordinary comfort specifically designed for relaxing both at home and in lounge areas. The project stems from Paolo Rizzatto’s idea of using two-dimensional shapes that, bended, create an ergonomic and lightweight 3D geometry. Identifying hide as the ideal material, Alias goes further by developing a combination of hide and thermoformed plastic, thus obtaining a resistant and elastic surface, capable of generating a very comfortable seat. Violon is available in two versions. The first one is characterised by a thermoformed shell combined with hide through traditional techniques. Two cushions complete this version. This armchair represents the ideal link between the artisan world and the industrial product, carefully balancing the contribution of both. The second version, violon soft, has an upholstered shell completely covered in fabric or leather. The zipper that runs along the side profile is hidden in the upholstery and allows the upholstery to be removed from the armchair. In both variants violon shell rotates on a 4-star cast aluminium base, which has an essential design and is proposed in Alias colour range. Violon collection is completed by a practical padded pouf. Tradition and innovation come together in this project that demonstrates how the design quality of Alias is timeless and ageless.
