“Irrespective of where I am, I can always earn a little extra pocket money,” is how Schillinger describes his Webshop, through which he sells part of his products. Not that the native of Vienna and graduate of the Royal College of Art can really live off the proceeds, which is why he also freelances as a designer on a broad variety of projects, such as for London designer Faye Toogood. Arenas in Antiquity, such as the Colosseum, were the inspiration for his Arena Bowls, which he casts from concrete or makes from sandstone: “It’s a matter of the very basics of parametric designing, the next step always follows from the preceding one.” Schillinger, who not only has the bowls but also a stool called “Left Over” with a concrete seat that has a DIY feel to it in his portfolio, does not want to limit himself to concrete alone, and therefore also works with glass and metal. Common to all his designs is a reduced, sparse language free of any superficial effects, and always deeply original.
