The idea of “adaptive architecture” has emerged from the debate on efficient building systems, meaning a form of architecture that constantly updates itself. It mainly adapts automatically to changing climatic conditions depending on the time of day or season. Not dissimilar to nature, it responds dynamically to change. The focus here is especially on the building’s outer shell. How to ensure it is adaptive? How can inside comfort and high energy efficiency both be boosted? How much effort is justifiable and what is the impact of adaptive outer building shells?
These questions and insights on the latest developments, references and the potential of adaptive facades will all be debated at the symposium on “Adaptive Outer Building Shells” on February 25, 2016 in the Vorhölzer Forum at Technische Universität München. The symposium will feature leading architects and engineers as speakers and is part of a series of events on adaptive building concepts – developed at the initiative of the Chair for Architectural Design and Building Envelopes, they will bring together experts from the fields of architecture, climate design and research.
